DANIELLE PELLERIN - Alumna Spotlight
Industrial Painter – Sandblaster/Sprayer/Grinder
Apprentice Level 6
MACKINNON AND OLDING LTD.
Q: What is your favourite part about working in your field?
A: Removing rust and/or paint with power tools and sandblasting, so fun!
Q: What is your most memorable Techsploration experience?
A: I remember trying to design a bridge out of popsicle sticks that could support a remote control car at the end-of-year convention in Port Hawkesbury.
Q: What or who inspired you to pursue your career in industrial painting?
A: I chose industrial painting after trying residential painting, I wanted to work in a trade that was colourful, physical, and a bit hardcore. I saw someone sandblasting steel at the shop one day and fell in love! Through my own labour market research and the Women Unlimited program, I learned that industrial painting was a growing trade and decided to leave a teaching career to pursue industrial coatings. I haven’t looked back since and love going to work every day.
Q: Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?
A: I see myself in the same trade, making a journeyperson’s wage, and hopefully in a position of power or as an on-site trainer.
Q: How has Techsploration impacted you and your career path?
A: My role model in the Techsploration program always told me to be open-minded, and try many types of jobs until you find one that you enjoy. She also taught me that trades are hard work, but for those who choose a trade for a career, it can be very rewarding.
